USA Based Moderna Company Announced 94.5% Effective Vaccine to Prevent COVID-19.

US-based biotechnology company Moderna says its vaccine is 94.5% effective against #coronavirus, according to early data.

oderna announced on Monday that its experimental Covid-19 vaccine 'mRNA-1273' was 94.5 per cent effective in preventing coronavirus. The statement was issued on the basis of interim data from a late-stage clinical trial.

The announcement makes Moderna the second US-based pharmaceutical giant to have reported exceedingly hopeful results from clinical trials of their respective coronavirus vaccine candidates. Just earlier this month, pharma giant Pfizer announced that its Covid-19 experimental vaccine was shown to be more than 90 per cent effective.

According to a press release by Moderna, the "first interim analysis included 95 participants with confirmed cases of Covid-19". The Phase-3 study met statistical criteria with a vaccine efficacy of 94.5 per cent, the statement went on to add.

Moderna now intends to submit for an emergency use authorisation (EUA) with the US FDA. The pharma giant "expects the EUA to be based on the final analysis of 151 cases and a median follow-up of more than 2 months".

If Moderna's experimental coronavirus vaccine gains the US FDA's approval, the United States could have two vaccines authorised for emergency use in December with as many as 60 million doses of vaccine made available by the end of 2020.

The assertion made by Moderna about its Covid-19 vaccine candidate is based on a 'COVE study' which included more than 30,000 participants in the US alone. This study was conducted in collaboration with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA).

Moderna's press release on Monday said, "The primary endpoint of the Phase 3 COVE study is based on the analysis of Covid-19 cases confirmed and adjudicated starting two weeks following the second dose of vaccine."
