More civilians continue being killed in #Metekel zone, #BenishangulGumuz region

Ethiopia: More civilians continue being killed in #Metekel zone, #BenishangulGumuz region

The Amhara Mass Media Agency (AMMA) reported yesterday that residents of #Bulen, #Dibate, #Mandura and #Dangur Weredas in Metekel Zone, Benishangul Gumuz regional state say “more civilians were recently killed, again”; the residents also say the regional state is reluctant to take measures against the perpetrators. The report did not mention the number of causalities.

Quoting displaced farmers, AMMA said that in addition to the killings, cattle belonging to the displaced farmers were looted and that farmers were calling for protection in order to collect their harvests as it is the season now.

Gashu Dugaz (pictured), head of the Benishangul Gumuz region peace and security bureau admitted the killings and said that civilians were being targeted in all Weredas of the region except for #Pawe Wereda. There was no sufficient security in all the remaining six Weredas of Metekel zone and that regional authorities were working to ensure sustainable peace and security in the areas. He also pledged that security forces will accompany farmers in order to help them collect their harvests, AMMA said.

It is to be remembered that On Saturday Nov. 14, the regional state said civilians were killed after attacks by armed men in Dibate district of Metekel Zone in an attack carried out on a public transport vehicle on the Wombera-Bulen-Dibate-Chagni route.

The regional state communication bureau alleged that the attack were perpetrated by “anti-peace agents backed by TPLF.” Among the injured include Dibate Wereda administrator Debeli Belgafo.
