Ethiopian Electric utility has introduced a new counter reading device

The Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU) has introduced a world-class meter reading device to address the gaps in meter readings.
The meter is a state-of-the-art meter reading device called Common Metering Reading (CMR). It requires the meter reader to go and read each counter user's customer area. This will reduce the number of complaints related to the reading of electricity bills.
The device will be fully operational after being tested at a nationally selected service center.

The meter reading device used can be used to record meter readings by entering a customer serial number at a distance of 50 meters or less; It also gives the reader a chance to verify that the recording was accurate.
The device needs to be implemented because the previous reading method is backward and paper-based, prone to errors, and shortens the time it takes to insert the readings into the system.

The tool is designed to solve reading problems, speed up processes, improve time and resources, eliminate paper-based systems, eliminate reading registration errors, reduce customer complaints, and ensure transparency and accountability.
It also helps customers pay their bills on time and contributes significantly to revenue collection. The institute is currently converting the reading process from paperwork to digital by distributing 2,000 hand-held counters at a cost of more than US $ 400,000 and distributing them to city administrations and regional electricity service bureaus. It will be fully operational by December 30, 2013.

Customers are expected to contribute to the effectiveness of the digital reading device as the digital meter reading device implemented by the institute is completely transparent and improves the process. In addition, customers are required to report in person at the local service center if the readers do not read their their power usage by visiting their homes / organizations.

Ethiopian Electric Utility has more than 550 service centers nationwide. It also has over 2.5 million postpaid customers.
